Setting up a forex broker looks intimidating until you break it into stages. The honest answer to “how long does it take?” is: the technology can be live in a day or two, while licensing, banking and liquidity decide the real timeline. This guide walks through forex broker setup in the order you should actually do it.
Step 1: Choose Your Business Model
Before touching any software, decide how you will operate:
- Introducing broker / grey label – you run your own brand on a provider’s licensed infrastructure. Fastest and cheapest start. See what MetaTrader grey label is.
- White label – your own branded platform, usually with more control. Compare in our grey vs white label guide.
- Full broker – your own license, own server, own risk management. Highest control, highest cost and compliance burden.
- Prop firm – evaluation challenges and funded accounts. See how to start a prop trading firm.
Step 2: Pick Your Trading Platform
MetaTrader remains the default for retail traders because clients already know it. Most new brokers pick MT5; some still want MT4 for its legacy EA ecosystem. We compared them in MT4 vs MT5 for new brokers.
Step 3: Handle the Legal and Regulatory Side
Regulation depends on where you operate and where you accept clients. Running your own brokerage generally requires a license, and costs vary widely; see forex broker license cost by jurisdiction. Grey label arrangements reduce the upfront burden, but you are still responsible for marketing within the rules of the countries you target. Get local legal advice before you accept clients.
Step 4: Set Up the Technology Stack
A working broker needs more than a trading server:
- Trading server (MT5/MT4) with account groups, leverage and symbol settings
- A forex CRM for leads, KYC, deposits and support
- A traders cabinet (client portal) for registration, funding and withdrawals
- Manager API connectivity so the CRM and platform stay in sync
- Price feed and, if you choose, liquidity connectivity
- A fast, conversion-focused website
Our full MetaTrader server package bundles these so you are not integrating five vendors.
Step 5: Decide Your Execution Model
Will you B-book (take the other side of client trades) or A-book (route to liquidity providers), or hybrid? It affects revenue, risk and regulation. Read A-book vs B-book for new brokers before deciding.
Step 6: Payments and Banking
Payment processing is often the slowest part. Plan for card processors, crypto, local payment methods and a segregated client funds approach appropriate to your jurisdiction. Start these conversations early, because onboarding can take weeks.
Step 7: Configure Account Types and Pricing
Create groups (for example Standard, ECN-style, VIP), set spreads or markups and commissions, leverage limits and minimum deposits. Keep the first launch simple: two or three account types are easier to market and support.
Step 8: Test Before You Go Live
Run through registration, KYC, deposit, trade, withdrawal and support ticket as a customer would. Test mobile and web terminals. Most launch-day problems come from untested payment or permission settings.
Step 9: Marketing and Acquisition
Technology does not bring clients. Plan for SEO, paid traffic, affiliates, an IB program and a sales follow-up process in your CRM.
Rough Timeline
- Grey label: platform live in about 24 hours with our packages
- Full MetaTrader server: about 2 days for the technical setup
- Licensing, banking and payments: weeks to months, depending on route
